Clinical Appointments
Learn more about the eligibility and application requirements for the different types of clinical academic appointments available in the Department of Laboratory Pathobiology (LMP).
All application requirements should be submitted directly to the LMP HR Office at lmp.hr@utoronto.ca.
Full-Time Clinical Academic Appointment
- Engages in academic work for at least 80% of professional working time. An individual who works part-time but devotes 80% or more of their professional working time to academic work, may be appointed as a full-time equivalent.
- Holds an active medical staff or equivalent appointment at an affiliated site.
- Participates in a Conforming Practice Plan or equivalent.
- Has an approved academic position description.
- Successful three-year review leads to “continuing annual appointment."
Term: the initial probationary appointment is for three years

Application requirements for full-time clinical appointments
- Online application form
- Candidate’s curriculum vitae. You are strongly encouraged to follow the Temerty Faculty of Medicine CV guidelines (word template).
- Current CPSO Certificate of Professional Conduct (CPC). Request your CPC directly through the CPSO online portal
- Clinical Academic Position. Must be signed by candidate and Clinical Chief.
- If you are applying for Professorial rank with a Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Educator academic position description, you are required to provide a teaching dossier, including:
- Teaching Report (word template)
- Supporting documentation related to teaching effectiveness (e.g. teaching evaluations, solicited and unsolicited letters from students/trainees, etc.)
- Brief three-year plan for research and/or teaching(word template). Must be signed by candidate and Clinical Chief.
- Letter of support from Clinical Chief. Letter must indicate estimated hospital start date. Academic appointments cannot be backdated.
- A minimum of three reference letters. Reference letters must be addressed to the LMP Department Chair, on the letterhead of the institution to which the referee belongs, and signed by the referee.
- Details of the hiring search, including:
- Copies of advertisements used in search process. Ads must include the names of journals/organizations where they were posted, the date of publication, and complete website address if it was an online ad.
- Committee membership, including university representative.
- Number of applicants, number short-listed candidates, and reason for selecting successful candidate.
Part-Time Clinical Academic Appointment
- Engages in academic work for 20-79% of professional time
- Holds a medical staff appointment at an affiliated site
- Has an approved academic position description
Term: one-year renewable at the discretion of the LMP Department Chair

Application requirements for part-time clinical appointments

- Does not hold a medical staff appointment at an affiliated site
- Not normally eligible for graduate appointment or to have research grants administered through the University of Toronto

Application requirements for adjunct clinical academic appointments
- Online application form
- Cover letter with the reason why an academic appointment is being requested.
- Candidate’s curriculum vitae. You are strongly encouraged to follow the Temerty Faculty of Medicine CV guidelines (word template).
- Current CPSO Certificate of Professional Conduct (CPC). Request your CPC directly through the CPSO online portal
- Clinical Academic Position. Must be signed by candidate and Clinical Chief.
- If you are applying for Professorial rank with a Clinician-Teacher academic position description, you are required to provide a teaching dossier, including:

- Letter of support from Clinical Chief (where applicable).
- A minimum of three reference letters are required if you are applying for a Professorial rank. Reference letters must be addressed to the LMP Department Chair, on the letterhead of the institution to which the referee belongs, and signed by the referee.
Clinical Cross-Appointments
- Holds a primary clinical academic appointment in another department at the University of Toronto.
- Expected to contribute to research and/or educational activities.
Term: one to three year(s) renewable at the discretion of the Department Chair.
Annual academic review: required to participate in the annual review process.
Application requirements for clinical cross-appointments
- Online application form
- Cover letter with the reason why an academic appointment is being requested
- Candidate’s curriculum vitae
- Letter of support from Chair of Primary Department, addressed to the LMP Department Chair, printed in the institution's letterhead, and signed.
- A copy of the candidate's fully executed current academic position description from their Primary Department
Visiting Professor (Clinical)
- A physician faculty member from another university or research institute who holds a continuing appointment in their home institution.
- Expected to contribute to the research and/or teaching activities of LMP and is required to adhere to applicable Departmental, Faculty and University policies during the duration of the visit.
- Those participating in clinical care must abide by the hospital or clinical site by-laws and policies and any other hospital directives pertinent to physicians practicing in that institution.
The Visiting Clinical Professor who intends to participate in clinical care must:
- be approved by the Medical Advisory Committee or equivalent of the relevant hospital or clinical site.
- obtain a certificate of registration authorizing academic practice by an Academic Visitor from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Academic appointment and work visa approval can take several months to complete. It is recommended that an application is submitted at least six months in advance of planned arrival date.
Term: No more than one year. Appointments for longer than one year duration require prior approval of the Vice-President and Provost of the University.

Application requirements for Visiting Professor (Clinical)

- Letter from home institution confirming sabbatical leave and that their home position is guaranteed upon return
- For international candidates

- Employer Compliance fee will be charged back to the sponsoring LMP faculty member
Emeritus/ Emerita (Clinical)
The University has allowed for the honorary title of Emeritus for those who retire from the University at the academic rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor.
This title may be held by clinical faculty who were either full-time or part-time clinical academic pre-retirement.
Emeriti do not need to hold a Medical Staff position at a Hospital, but they may do so, with teaching duties as assigned, if the hospital Chief and Department Chair concur.
Annual academic review: not applicable
Application requirements for Emeritus/ Emerita (Clinical)
Qualified retiring faculty should send a letter to the LMP Department Chair requesting Emeritus / Emerita Status and noting retirement date.

Recruitment of Clinical Academic Positions (search and job posting)
We require Full-Time Clinical appointments to be posted on the University of Toronto's Career Opportunities website.
- Use the template (PDF) to draft an advertisement.
- Advertisements must run for a minimum of 35 working days before making an offer.
- A university representative is required for academic faculty search. The university representative is usually the LMP Department Chair or their delegate. Please contact the LMP Department Chair when setting up the search committee.
- The hospital department must check with their hospital Human Resources with regards to meeting the requirements for the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application, in case a foreign candidate is identified. The University does not assist with LMIA application for foreign physicians.
- Search committees are strongly encouraged to complete the unconscious bias exercises.
