Research

Over 350 LMP faculty members take part in a broad spectrum of research at state-of-the-art facilities across Toronto.

Our diverse research encompasses all organ systems and is enabled by a wide variety of techniques ranging from world-class discovery and mechanistic research to key areas of translational research — including biomarkers, biobanking, quality, and informatics.

We foster collaborations within the department and encourage basic and clinical scientists to translate their research into new discoveries and potential treatments.

As an academic department, LMP emphasizes the creation and communication of knowledge, focusing on the causes and mechanisms of disease, translating knowledge into improved medical practice and health outcomes, and informing health policy.

LMP Investigators cover a wide spectrum of research aimed at understanding the causes and mechanisms of human disease.

The term “Pathobiology” encompasses:

  • Pathology – the nature of changes produced by disease.
  • Pathogenesis – the mechanisms and changes in disease that occur at the molecular, cellular and tissue level.
  • Pathophysiology – the changes in organ and systems function that accompany disease.

In this context, pathophysiology is very important, as disease is often underpinned by normal physiologic mechanisms that have gone awry; therefore we emphasize the importance of studying the full spectrum of normal development and tissue function.
