Clinician Scientist Training Program

We are one of the only departments offering basic research and clinical training opportunities, emphasizing the importance of research and its impact on health.

In conjunction with the University of Toronto's Clinician Investigator Program (CIP), our Clinician Scientist Training Program allows you to pursue your MSc or PhD degree within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine while training as a pathologist or laboratory medicine specialist. It is an accredited postgraduate medical training program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The purpose of the LMP Clinician Scientist Training Program is to provide excellent research training for outstanding trainees in a laboratory medicine residency training program who plan to pursue an academic career.

The Clinician Investigator Program (Msc)

The Clinician Investigator Program is fully accredited by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident currently training in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited specialty of laboratory medicine.

Application deadline: February 1 for a July 1 start date. 

The Clinician Scientist Training Program (PhD)

The Clinician Scientist Training Program is directed to the training of future clinician scientists.

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident currently training in one of the subspecialties of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Toronto and are considering the pursuit of a research career in academic medicine.

You will undertake two to four years of research training under the supervision of a member of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

Application deadline: Februrary 1 for a July 1 start date. 

Entry requirements

You must:

  • be a current Postgraduate trainee in a laboratory medicine residency training program at the University of Toronto
  • enroll in the University of Toronto Clinician Investigator Program (CIP), see below for application process
  • demonstrate sustained excellence throughout your clinical residency training.
  • have a clear understanding of research training paths and the requirements for acquiring appropriate skills for a future career in research. Previous research experience is desirable but not a requirement
  • have strong support from your residency training Program Director. 
  • enroll in a graduate program for a minimum of two years within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and successfully complete an MSc (two years) or PhD (four years) degree, if you don't have a graduate degree.

If you have a PhD degree, you may enter a two-year research program as a postdoctoral fellow. 

All research supervisors must be faculty members of the School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto and must have appointments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. 

Funding

For the first two years of research training

You will receive funding towards salary and/or tuition.

Salary funding will be dependant on your PGY classification and will conform to the amounts set by the Ontario Ministry of Health (as outlined in PAIRO-CAHO Agreement)

You receive a stipend from the Graduate department you are enrolled in - see your individual department for details.

We will provide supplemental funding above this stipend level in order to ensure that you receive a salary appropriate to your level of training.

You are expected to apply for postgraduate research fellowship awards from external, peer-reviewed grant funding agencies. 

For research training beyond two years (for the purpose of completing a PhD)

If you obtain a postgraduate research fellowship from an external, peer-reviewed grant-funding agency (e.g. CIHR, NCIC), you will continue to receive full funding as outlined above.

If you do not obtain a postgraduate research fellowship from an external, peer-reviewed grant-funding agency you will receive salary funding only.
