Duration of stipend and satisfactory performance
The stipend is subject to a student's 'good standing', which includes:
- satisfactory progress in coursework
- satisfactory progress in thesis research. You are expected to complete and defend your thesis within the normal program length.
- participation in other academic activities of the graduate program.
The supervisor should notify the Graduate Coordinator immediately of any issues related to poor performance in the program.
The Graduate Coordinator will investigate and can suspend the stipend if the issues are not quickly resolved.
The stipend will be reinstated or ended dependent on the final resolution.
In general, if you remain “in good standing”, you will be funded for the duration of your graduate program.
Completing a thesis and its defence
Once the supervisory committee has agreed that you have completed all necessary laboratory experiments needed for writing your thesis, you will have time to prepare the thesis and schedule a defence:
- MSc students: maximum of three months
- PhD students: maximum of six months
You will continue to be paid your stipend during this period.
If you do not schedule your defense within the required time period, you must apply to the Graduate Coordinator and/or Department Chair for an extension.
The continuation of stipend payments is not guaranteed but is at the discretion of the supervisor and department.
