Research Synopsis
Transfusion medicine and cardiovascular surgery
We are conducting a multicenter pilot randomized controlled trial funded by CIHR to address the optimum hemoglobin concentration for red cell transfusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
The pilot study will form the basis of a large definitive randomized controlled trial.
We are also interested in optimizing platelet utilization in this population as there is a need to define the indications for transfusion to avoid the adverse events of transfusion.
Transfusion medicine and maternal fetal medicine
We are establishing databases for patients with:
- red cell alloimmunization during pregnancy to address the correlation between antibody titres and clinical outcomes and to investigate alloantibody formation
- alloimmunization to platelet antigens to characterize patients with neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.
We are also interested in looking at maternal screening for these antigens using fetal gentoyping from maternal plasma for patients alloimmunized to red cell and platelet antigens.
Hematological disorders in pregancy
We are establishing a prospective database of all hematological disorders in pregnancy.
All patients with hematological disorders e.g. thrombosis, immune thrombocytopenia and hemoglobinopathies will be entered into the database to allow for:
- assessment of therapeutic measures
- analysis of adverse outcomes
- research initiatives.
Evidence based practice guideline
We are establishing an international collaboration to develop evidence based practice guidelines for transfusion medicine.
This international initiative welcomes recommendations for guideline topics.
