Centre for Machine Learning in Medicine: call for membership

Research: Artificial Intelligence in healthcare

On July 1, the Centre for Machine Learning in Medicine (C-MLM) came into formal existence.

Over the past 18 months, you have likely heard about this Centre through consultations and inquires as the proposal was developed and worked its way through governance approval. Now that it has been formally established as an EDU-C, we want to extend an invitation to faculty and learners to join the Centre as members.

The Centre’s website is currently under development, but let me take this opportunity to tell you more about the Centre and what membership means.

About the Centre for Machine Learning in Medicine

C-MLM will connect researchers and learners from multiple disciplines and professions to advance medicine through data science, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

We will work towards developing new tools and practices that will improve healthcare and create data science solutions that can be scaled globally.

Our mission is to educate and train future leaders in medicine and healthcare delivery to understand and be able to utilize AI to improve health outcomes and foster collaborative research in the field. We have the following primary goals:

  • To establish a leading program in applied health-related machine learning education, including didactic training, student practicums, hackathons, and symposia;
  • To create a robust health data environment with existing partners that enables timely access to high quality health data for both applied and academic research; and,
  • To foster collaborative research in the field through multidisciplinary teams, access to data, and targeted funding initiatives.

What does it mean to have membership in C-MLM?

As a newly established centre for research and education, C-MLM seeks energetic members who want to explore the intersection of where data science, including AI and machine learning meets medical practice and research.

We expect members to contribute their time and ideas to build robust training opportunities – including seminars, workshops and symposiums – that will build understanding and awareness of the applications of AI in medicine.

We are also seeking individuals who are inherently curious and collaborative to develop research partnerships to solve novel problems in health utilizing data-driven tools.

In addition to contributing to the Centre’s development, members will have the opportunity to apply for funding opportunities and attend events. We anticipate, as the Centre develops, there will be further benefits that we hope inaugural members will help us define.

How do I apply?

Membership in C-MLM is open to all faculty and learners at the University of Toronto and researchers based at any affiliated institution. Apply for membership on the Temerty Faculty of Medicine website by Friday September 18, 2020.

Contact Liam Mitchell (liam.mitchell@utoronto.ca) if you have any further questions about C-MLM.

Sincerely,
