On Saturday, May 6th, the LMP graduate student union, known as CLAMPS, held its first in-person high school outreach event in the Medical Sciences Building in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
An event usually held online, the students opted to make an interactive, in-person event this year.
Organised by the CLAMPS external team, including students Lauren Joe, Bana Samman, and CLAMPS Co-Presidents, Matsya Thulasiram, and Rupal Hatkar, the event attracted over 60 high school students from across Toronto.
Lauren Joe commented, “It was such a fun day, and the students were so engaged. We all very much enjoyed sharing our experiences, our learning and research environments, and hopefully, we inspired more young people to study science at university!”
The High School students had a range of activities to engage in; from talks by current graduate students, alumni, and faculty, to lab tours and hands-on experiments to try out. They seemed to particularly enjoy a blood typing simulation!
On the feedback received from the event, Lauren observed, “It was a great success to hold this event in person and the students found the chance to get inside the labs and try out experiments most rewarding, so we will definitely look at bringing more of that in next year!”
