Welcome to our new postgraduates 2021!
We’re delighted to welcome the new residents and trainees to LMP!
As part of our Postgraduate programs, they will spend the next few years in LMP and taking part in rotations throughout various clinical laboratories. If you see them once they arrive in July, please say hello.
They tell us what they are looking forward to during their time in LMP.
James Burns
Medical Microbiology (Residency Training Program)
“After completing my UK internal medicine training and a Masters degree in Tropical medicine, I have spent the last three years working on interventional HIV clinical trials at University College London.
More recently, I helped to deliver COVID-19 research throughout the pandemic in London, UK which included the initial regulatory studies for Remdesivir as a treatment, the RECOVERY trial, and the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine study.
I’m most looking forward to training in a new city (and country!) alongside like-minded colleagues.”
Cathy Cao
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“Prior to residency in LMP, I was a medical student at McMaster University. I also did my MSc in medical sciences and BSc. in biology at McMaster.
In LMP, I will be starting an anatomical pathology residency and I'm looking forward to learning all about pathology and achieving my goal of becoming a pathologist. I’m very excited to be joining LMP!”
Ghulam Dhabaan
Clinical Microbiology (Postdoctoral Diploma Program)
“Before joining LMP, I was conducting clinical microbiology research as a postdoctoral research fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital and a research associate at UHN.
I am excited to be spending most of my time training in different microbiology laboratories and participating in every possible clinical activity alongside many other experts in the labs/Hospitals to build comprehensive clinical microbiology expertise.”
Sarah Khan
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“I completed medical school in Ireland at NUI Galway. I was so taken by the Emerald Isle that I stayed on to work for six years! After intern year, I completed my Basic Specialist Training in Internal Medicine, then went on to work in Geriatrics for two years. I've spent the last year as a clinical lecturer in Medicine in Dublin.
Throughout this time, I developed a love for Pathology, so when I decided to come home to Canada, the decision to change tracks into this wonderful discipline became clear. I've taken a rather circuitous road to arrive where I am today, but I wouldn't change a thing.
I’m most excited about learning about a vast discipline and gaining a totally new skillset... not to mention working with a great team!”
Samantha Logan
Clinical Chemistry (Postdoctoral Diploma Program)
“Before becoming a trainee at LMP, I was completing my PhD in Biology (with a specialization in Biochemistry) at Carleton University in Dr. Kenneth Storey’s lab. I was studying the molecular adaptations that wild animals use to survive harsh environmental conditions.
I’m looking forward to learning from the best, in some of the best hospitals in Canada, how to apply my knowledge of Biochemistry and molecular techniques to human health problems.”
Ngoc-Nhu Jennifer Nguyen
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“I did my medical degree at the University of Montreal after completing college studies in Health Science at a CEGEP in Quebec and the medicine preparatory program at my home university.
I am highly interested in histopathological analysis and in participating in research projects to further understand medical and oncological pathologies.
I would feel extremely lucky to teach at university and to share my love for anatomical pathology with medical students as teaching has always been a passion of mine. I am really looking forward to working at the multiple hospitals in Toronto during my residency to meet different lab teams and to acquire enriching professional experiences in order to become the best pathologist I can be!”
Annie Ren
Clinical Chemistry (Postdoctoral Diploma Program)
“I am completing a PhD in LMP at the University of Toronto before I start the Clinical Chemistry postdoctoral program in July.
I am most looking forward to the clinical rotations at the different hospitals.”
Tara Syed
Hematological Pathology (Residency Training Program)
"Before becoming a resident, I completed my MD at NOSM, where I first became aware of my passion for diagnostic medicine and hematology and became interested in medical education. I spent my summers working on research projects in this area and, since graduating, I have continued to stay involved.
During my MD, I remained active in developing programming to improve the well-being of at-risk youth in Northern Ontario, which is an area I have been volunteering in since high school.
I am most looking forward to being challenged, growing professionally and personally, and developing a great network of colleagues and mentors. I am very passionate about hematopathology and feel incredibly fortunate to have matched into the outstanding program at U of T. I am very motivated to be part of the advancement of this field, and I believe training in this program is the first step towards that goal."
Trevor Teich
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“I just graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to that, I completed my Undergraduate and Master's degree in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University.
I’m really looking forward to being able to dive deeply into the world of pathology full time and finally being back home in Toronto with my wife, family, and friends."
Anju Thomas
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“After completing my medical degree and postgraduate residency in Pathology from Kerala, India, I was working as an Assistant Professor in Pathology, where I was involved in clinical diagnostic services as well as medical education. My areas of academic interests include oncopathology, renal pathology, and hematopathology.
During my time in LMP, I hope to dive into the depths of this field, to explore and widen my academic interests, and be involved in cancer research activities. I am looking forward to being part of the amazing team of world-leading experts to carry forward my passion for pathology, learn, share, and have fun!”
Qianghua (Steven) Zhou
Hematological Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“Before joining LMP, I was a medical lab technologist at UHN and also at Mount Sinai Hospital. I was helping out with the COVID-19 testing in the UHN-Mount Sinai Hospital's Microbiology department.
One thing I'm most excited about is to learn from the expert faculty members.”
Alexandra Zyla
Anatomical Pathology (Residency Training Program)
“I have been on maternity leave, enjoying laughter and adventures with my now 13-month-old! Prior to this, I completed my undergraduate degree and medical education at the University of Toronto.
I will be joining my dear husband, Roman, a PGY-4 in the program, who has set the bar high for me!
I am looking forward to lots of learning, exploring different subspecialties, carrying out interesting and meaningful research, as well as forming lasting friendships with co-residents and colleagues that will carry forward into our professional careers.“
