Pui-Yuen Wong
PhD, FCACB
P. Y. Wong received a B.Sc degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D degree from McMaster University. In 1971, he started his career as a junior clinical biochemist at the Toronto General Hospital. During the past 40 years, he has been working in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University Health Network specialized in immunodiagnostics and clinical immunology. Academically, he is a professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. In 2010, he retired from active clinical service and is now working part time in research.
Dr. Wong is a founding fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. He has been working as an advisor, a committee member and a chairperson of several QMPLS committees from 1979 to 2010. In 2007, Dr. Wong received the Carl Jolliff Award from the Immunology division of the AACC in recognizing his life time achievement in clinical and laboratory immunology.
Dr. Wong has been actively involved in teaching and in clinical laboratory research since 1970’s. He was a course coordinator for the U of T yearly summer immunoassay refresher course from 1975 to 1990 and the analytical biochemistry course from 1995 to 2004. He has published 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 70 abstracts to date. His research interest is in immunodiagnostics, biomarker discovery and metabolism of immunosuppressants. He has been a consultant to several diagnostic companies. Since 2004, his research laboratory is one of several Abbott’s Centers of Excellence for Architect immunoassay research and development.
After working 40 years at University Health Network and University of Toronto, Dr. Wong has retired from active teaching, research and clinical services in 2010. Currently, he works part time in research and development of Abbott Centre of Excellent project.
